[TUTORIAL] Smartphone-based heart rate monitor

I wrote this article a few weeks ago, but only now I have realized that it may be of interest for someone around here (MATLAB is used throughout the article, but there's really no need to know it).

The following is the introduction of the article:

If you own a smartphone, you most likely have encountered, at some point, some sort of app that allows for heart rate monitoring. You just place your finger in front of the camera, and wait. After some seconds, you get a result that should be the number of your heart's contractions per minute. Many are skeptical about the actual accuracy of this technique. What I am going to try to do in this article is determine whether an LED and a camera are enough to get an accurate reading of one's heart rate.
