Can an USB JIG do any damage on an unsupported device?

Hello,

I would really like to know if an USB JIG could do any damage on an unsupported device.

I need to enter the download mode on my phone and this is the last thing that I can try before sending it to a service. None of the regular key combinations seem to work, not even 'adb reboot download'.
