There are a lot of conflicting methods for rooting the Star N9500 on the web so this is my attempt to explain exactly what to do to root the Star N9500/MTK 6859 phones.
You will need:
PdaNe+t for pc (NOT Win8) or mac
Motochopper exploit
Optional for custom rom with cwm recovery
Flashtool
USB Vcom Driver
Rooting Method:
Download Motochopper exploit and extract to your location of choice.
Connect your phone to your pc by usb cable and turn it on
Navigate to the location of the motochopper exploit
Double-click "run.bat"
When it says "press any key to continue", do just that
If it stalls at "device found", start device manager and right-click a few times to bring up the menu with "scan for hardware changes" and click it
It should then install the drivers for your phone and the exploit should finish.
When it says "Press Enter to reboot and exit" do it
Your phone will now reboot and be rooted. Install SuperSU and a root checker from Google Play. Run the root checker and it should show the phone is rooted and you have Super User access.
Flash custom rom with cwm
This custom rom is really just the stock rom with a few added feature and tweaks. The camera app gives a lot more quality options and the gps locks on much faster. Installing it now gives you clockwork mod recovery (vol up + power) instead of just factory mode (vol down + power).
Flashing Method (will remove root)
Download and install PdaNet+
Download and extract N9500-V2 rom
Download and extract SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1308.0.125.rar
Download and extract usb vcom driver
Power your phone off and remove the battery for a few seconds
Replace the battery and leave the phone off
Navigate to where you extracted SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1308.0.125
Double-click Flash_Tool.exe
Click the "scatter-loading" button, navigate to where you extracted N9500-V2.rar (N9500-V2/N9500/10052103/) and select MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc.txt
Press F9 or click the Download button. Do NOT click upgrade as this will semi-brick your phone!

Connect your phone to your pc by usb
Run PdaNet+ and install the usb vcom drivers
The phone will be detected and the flash will install:
A red bar will fill, followed by a purple bar, then yellow and finally a green circle showing the flash has been successful.
Exit the application and remove the battery from your phone for a few seconds
Replace the battery and hold the power button while holding vol up button
The blue android will appear - keep holding
The cwm recovery screen will appear with the recovery options. Release the buttons.
You navigate the options using vol up/down and select using the power button
After flashing this rom you will lose root access, so run the rooting instructions again to have a fully rooted N9500 with cwm recovery
